Lighting the Pathway to Faculty Careers in STEM – Deadline May 1, 2015


Targeted students will be AI/AN higher education students at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels who have expressed interest in becoming faculty members in STEM fields at colleges, universities, and tribal colleges across the United States. Selection of students will seek balance with respect to a diversity of tribes, geographic areas in the United States, STEM majors and gender. AISES projects to weight selection of students more heavily toward undergraduates (80%) with fewer graduate students (14%) and postdoctoral students (6%). In a cohort of 50 students, 40 would be undergraduates, 7 graduate students, and 3 postdoctoral trainees.
Applicants must:

* Be full-time college undergraduate or graduate students majoring in a field within BIO, MPS, GEO, CISE, or ENG at an accredited four-year college/university or a two-year college enrolled in a program leading to an academic degree;
* Aspire to become a faculty member at a college, university, or tribal college;
* Have a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA), with consideration given to applications reflecting somewhat lower GPAs but with high potential to raise their GPA above 3.0; and
* Be a member of AISES.


Purpose of Program

Scholars will be encouraged to participate in the project throughout its five-year duration as appropriate to their progress toward achieving an advanced academic degree and maintaining a faculty career path. Upon completion of participation in meetings with the mentor and workshops, students will receive a modest stipend per semester (during the first two years of participation). In addition, students will receive considerable academic, career path and networking benefits that will also promote participation. The opportunity to interact with Native peers with similar scientific and career interests is expected to be a major motivator for the participants.
The purpose of this program is to increase the number of American Indian/Alaska Native students college and graduate students who are already intending to, or are considering a path to becoming faculty members in STEM disciplines. Program participants will be connected to mentors in their field(s) of study, exposure to research opportunities, individualized resources and supports, and travel support for participation in AISES events and other discipline-specific conferences that provide individualized enrichment and opportunities for networking and portfolio building. Participation in this program is optional. Participants will be requested to complete surveys prior to beginning this program, and may be requested to complete surveys at certain intervals during the course of their two years of participation. Students may decline to complete surveys at any point during their participation in the program. AISES will provide participant information only in ways that protect the privacy of individual participants. Thus results of data will be made public in the aggregate, with no identifiable information about individual participants, or with all identifiable personal information redacted. AISES will utilize the following metrics to assess the program: AISES will assess student success in: 1) Persistence (number of students who remain in good standing in their degree programs in a STEM field); 2) Degree attainment; 3) Research participation; 4) Portfolio building (papers published, conference presentations given, awards won, outreach activities, and leadership roles by participants; 5) Advancement to the next level (number of graduating students who advance to the next level toward an academic career path); 6) Fellowship applications and awards; 7) Student understanding of the academic career path; and 8) Participant commitment to a STEM academic career.

2015 EPA Greater Research Fellowships for Undergrads in Environmental Studies – Deadline May 19

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announces the posting of the Request for Applications, 2015 EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships for Undergraduate Environmental Study with the goal of offering undergraduate fellowships for bachelor level students in environmental fields of study. Subject to availability of funding and other applicable considerations, the Agency plans to award approximately 34 new fellowships.  Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer of their junior year. The fellowship provides up to $20,700 per academic year of support and $8,600 of support for a three-month summer internship.
Supporting these fellowships is in line with the Sustainable and Healthy Communities (SHC) Research Program. EPA’s SHC Research Program provides useful science and tools for decision makers at all levels to help communities advance sustainability as well as achieve regulatory compliance. SHC is collaborating with partners to conduct research that will result in science-based knowledge to guide decisions that will better sustain a healthy society and environment in America’s communities.  The research is intended for decision-makers at the federal, regional, state and community levels.
