REU at Materials Research Center at Columbia University and City College – Apply by Feb. 15th!

The joint Materials Research Center program at Columbia University and City College of NY (CCNY) will support outstanding undergraduates as Summer Research Fellows each year. In addition, a joint REU program between Columbia and the City University of New York’s Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) may have additional openings. Those selected will have an opportunity to participate fully in an interdisciplinary research program that draws faculty from the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, nearby government laboratories (Brookhaven National Laboratory), and industry (IBM).

Our materials research program encompasses two research thrusts around the theme of building higher dimensional materials from lower dimensional structures with unprecedented levels of control. The first thrust combines two-dimensional layered materials such as graphene into layered heterostructures; the second combines molecular ‘superatoms’ into three-dimensional solids.  Both thrusts are built around techniques pioneered by the team, and bring together researchers with diverse capabilities, strong accomplishments, and a record of collaboration. Additional Summer Research Fellows in related areas will also be available.

During the program, all REU students will also be involved in workshops, visits to local industry, recreational activities, a symposium of presentations by students, and other activities. It will include training in: laboratory practices and safety; shared materials characterization tools; and scientific writing/presentations. Students attend a weekly research seminar series by Columbia, CCNY and ASRC faculty, and present results at a daylong symposium at the end of the program.

Interested in a paid summer research internship at NYIT?

The NYIT REU Program will provide opportunities for 10 motivated and talented undergraduate students to collaborate with our faculty and graduate students in research on methods of securing smartphones and their networks using both hardware and software approaches (women and minority students are strongly encouraged to apply).

Undergraduates will have access to NYIT’s state-of-the-art research facilities and gain valuable hands-on research experience in simulating the spread of malware on smartphones, implementing cryptographic algorithms and authentication schemes for smartphones, studying topology control of wireless networks, geolocating smartphones, detecting physical attack on a network of smartphones, and developing privacy-protected medical sensing methods using smartphones.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

The research projects require full-time commitment of the student (five days a week/40 hours per week). Students are not allowed to work while participating in the program. In conjunction with the requirements of the faculty advisors, all participants are required to submit a research paper, produce a research poster, and make a final presentation describing their work. Students also participate in supplemental activities including workshops, meetings, classes, field trips to enhance their program experience and preparation for graduate school.

  • Have not already completed a B.A. or B.S. degree
  • Have a 3.2 or better cumulative grade point average

Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Biochemistry

May 30 – August 2, 2017

The Program: Students can participate in a 10-week summer research program under the direction of the Biochemistry and Biophysics faculty. Topics of research include:

  • structural biology
  • molecular genetics
  • genomics
  • enzymology
  • biophysics

Students will have weekly meetings, which allows them to explore research opportunities, discussing research ethics, and learn effective oral and written presentation skills. Financial support will include a stipend of $5250, in addition to living expenses on campus, and some assistance with travel expenses.

Eligibility: The program is open to undergraduate students majoring in biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, biology, or any life science. Preference will be given to candidates who have finished their third year and already taken organic chemistry and biochemistry courses. However, outstanding students who have completed their second year of college work will also be considered. This program is committed to provide research opportunities for students from groups that are underrepresented in the sciences.

Penn State Physics & Materials REU and RET

Program Details

 Dates

The period of the program for the summer of 2017 is from May 30 st to August 4th, inclusive (9 AM May 30- 5 pm Aug 4). It is expected that students will normally be working here at Penn State throughout this time. If these dates conflict with your school’s academic schedule please let us know on your application form. It may be possible to arrange alternative dates in some cases.

Stipends

Students will receive a stipend of $5,000 for the summer for the NSF funded Interdisciplinary Materials Physics and MRSEC REU Programs. Housing on campus will be paid for for NSF funded students.

Students of Penn State’s Physics Department will receive a salary determined by the department. Currently this salary is $4000. Housing is not included for Penn State Physics Students.

Research

Visiting students will be matched with mentors from Condensed Matter Physics, Interdisciplinary Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering departments, according to their mutual interests. In your application you will have the opportunity to describe your research interests. Examples of previous research can be found on the research page.

Travel

We can reimburse out-of-state students for some travel expenses to and from Penn State for visiting students. The University Park campus is located in central Pennsylvania, in the town of State College. State College is about a three hour drive or bus ride from Pittsburgh, about four hours from Philadelphia, Washington DC or Baltimore and five hours from New York. Flights into State College are available through Detroit, Philadelphia or Washington Dulles.

Eligibility

The NSF requires that REU participants must be either US citizens or permanent residents (Penn State Physics Students can be of any nationality). During the summer students must be enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor’s degree. The only exception is for students transferring from one university or college to another. High school graduates who have not yet entered a bachelor’s program, and seniors graduating before the summer are not eligible. Most students in the program will probably be college juniors, however applications are also welcomed from sophomores and freshman.

Women, Minorities and the Disabled

An important goal of the REU program is to provide an opportunity to do research to students who are historically underrepresented within scientific research. This especially includes women, members of underrepresented minorities and persons with disabilities whose talents will be an important contribution to the nation’s scientific resources for the future. Housing Arrangements

The visiting REU participants will be housed in on-campus university apartments that are a short walk from the department of Physics. Students will be responsible for making their own arrangements for meals – all apartments have kitchens. A number of restaurants are available both on campus and off campus. Convenience and grocery stores are also within easy reach. Please note, you will be responsible for all problems and damages that may occur during your stay. Parking is an option as well and will be an extra charge.

Group Training:

The first full day on campus will be spent on an orientation tour of the physics department, research facilities, libraries, and the campus. This will include recreation and cultural facilities, and other resource centers. You will complete lab safety training, and get your penn state ID activated. You will meet your faculty advisor and the graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in your research group.

Outreach:

There are two outreach activities which occur during the suDSCN3114.JPGmmer in which REU students have had the opportunity to participate. One is a trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to learn about how science is conveyed in a museum setting. The other is helping to staff a science booth during Kids Day of the Central Pennsylvania Arts Fest,which happens in downtown State College. Both of these experiences provide an opportunity to learn and practice how science is conveyed to the public.

Professional Development:

The focus of this REU program is on scientific communication and interdisciplinary research. Each week will will have a meeting where we will cover topics of professional development relating to communicating science (be it to the public, to your peers, or to other scientists) and where faculty will describe their current research and other exciting current developments in their field. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions.  To foster discussion about science and other topics there will also be networking and teambuilding activities organized to encourage everyone to get to know each other, and  graduate students, postdocs and faculty on an informal leveDSC02277.JPGl. This is one of the best ways to get a feel for what a career in science and engineering is all about.

Finally, at the end of the summer we will have a joint research symposium where you will give a short presentation on your project and a poster about your research to an audience of the other students who were engaged in summer reserach, your graduate mentors and your faculty advisors.

Research Experience for Undergraduates 2017

Overview

The Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M will host an eight-week Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) from May 30 to July 21 in the summer of 2017. We will have programs in Algebraic Methods in Computational Biology, Algorithmic Algebraic Geometry, and Number Theory. We will have up to 5 student participants for each program. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Support for the program has been provided by the National Science Foundation.

Program Expectations

  • The REU is a full-time summer position. Students are expected to work on mathematics and research approximately 40 hours every week.
  • Students will give bi-weekly short presentations (5-10 minutes) on what they learn and their research results during the program.
  • Students will write a report on their research. This will be approximately 10-15 pages long.
  • Students will make individual final 20 minute mini-symposium presentations on their research projects during the last week of the program.
  • Students will learn LaTeX for writing mathematical articles, reports, and making presentations.
  • Students may learn to use and program a computer algebra system such as MATLAB, Sage, or Mathematica.

Eligibility

Applicants should be highly motivated and successful undergraduates who are comfortable with calculus, basic matrix manipulations and elementary linear algebra. Students in the mathematical modeling in biology program should have some background in differential equations. Students interested in pursuing statistical modeling should also have had an introductory statistics course. No special prior experience with mathematical software or computers is required. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and must not have received their bachelors degree before the start of the summer program.

Stipend and Support

Participating students will be provided free on-campus housing, along with an anticipated stipend of $4000 for the 8 week program plus subsidized travel to and from College Station.

Description

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (short for science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.

Selected candidates will train under the mentorship of program officials and scientists on focused research projects consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy. During the 10 weeks, Fellows will receive a stipend and some students may be eligible to receive housing and travel allowance for the duration of the program.

At the conclusion of the program, Fellows are required to attend a “Technical Forum” where they will present their research findings and tour a technical site located nearby.

Stipends

The MLEF program provides stipends to Fellows based on the following scale:

  • Undergraduate students receive a weekly stipend of $600;
  • Master’s students receive a weekly stipend of $750;
  • Ph.D. students or graduates receive a weekly stipend of $850.

Some participates may be eligible to receive a housing and travel allowance.

Selections are based on a student’s qualifications and the needs of the host site. Proximity to the host is not factored during the selection process. The 10-week summer program may place students at one of several possible FE sites including:

REUMASS AMHERST: A SUMMER COMPUTING RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN DATA SCIENCE

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Starting in Summer 2015, the College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst will offer a new 10-week data science summer research program for undergraduates. Students will have the opportunity to conduct research projects in multiple areas relevant to data science including applications (computational social science, computational ecology and sustainability, mobile health, etc.), data analytics (machine learning, NLP, etc.), and computational infrastructure for data science (databases, parallel and distributed systems, cloud computing, etc.).

Students will work on research projects under the supervision of a faculty member and graduate student mentor. Students will present the final results of their work at an open poster session during the final week of the program and, where appropriate, at their home institutions and/or scholarly venues such as conferences.

ACTIVITIES

REUMass will start with a one-week intensive data science boot camp for all participants. The program will also include weekly group lunches with a short presentation from a current CS graduate student and a technical presentation or talk relevant to data science research. The program also includes a field trip to nearby Computer Science research centers like Google Cambridge and the Microsoft NERD Lab.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Accepted participants must diligently work towards completing a research project during the duration of the program. To guide you with your research, we ask our students to submit a topic of their summer research, approved by their mentors by the end of their 2nd/3rd week. This is followed by a 10-min presentation of their research progress at the end of 6th week. Finally, students will participate in a poster session showcasing their research in the last week of the program.

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS

NSF requires that all student participants be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. No exceptions can be made. Undergraduates who have taken computer science courses and will be entering their junior or senior year in Sept. 2017 are eligible to apply. We particularly encourage students with community college experience, either those in the process of transferring from a community college to a 4-year institution or those who are already at a 4-year institution but were previously enrolled at a community college.

CLIMB UP for Summer Research at UB- 2017 – Apply by Feb. 1st!

What is CLIMB UP?

CLIMB UP (Undergraduate Program) for Summer Research gives students an opportunity to conduct research in the biomedical and health sciences and explore graduate career opportunities. At the end of the program, students will present posters and/or oral presentations in a professional symposium.

(Students should arrive in Buffalo on Tuesday May 30th. Program activities begin Wednesday May 31st. The official end date of the program is Friday, August 4th. Students can move out of housing the evening of August 4th or Saturday August 5th.)

Research

The CLIMB-UP Summer Research Program will match you with a participating faculty mentor whose interests are complementary to your own. You will work on your own research project and get hands-on experience during the 10-week program. The summer will culminate with you and your peers presenting your work at the Summer Research Day with students from other UB summer research programs.

Laboratory Skills Training

During the first week in the program, students attend the Introduction to Laboratory Skills course, taught by Dr. David Shubert and Ms. Deborah Timineri, Instructional Support Associate. Students learn essential skills and important laboratory safety protocols to conduct their summer research.

Mentoring

In addition to your faculty mentor, you will receive mentoring and guidance from graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and the CLIMB leadership to ensure you have a productive and fulfilling summer. They will work with you on your research project, help you prepare your presentations, and provide insight on careers in science. Being part of CLIMB-UP could be the start of lifelong friendships and mentor relationships.

Stipend and Housing

Funds are available to provide a living stipend (room and board plus incidentals, paid biweekly) for a limited number of students. Housing is provided for students who live outside Buffalo.
